The idea for a Veterans Clinic to be placed at its current location, the former Heritage Hospital-Brown Schools site, first surfaced in 1998 in the Chronicle's Sounding-Off section. Gary Bartell worked with Veteran organizations to gain the support of local, state, and federal officials for a multi-agency services center and Veteran Clinic to be located in Citrus County at the former Heritage Hospital/Brown Schools site. In 2003 the county was notified by former Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite that the VA was looking for sites for a new clinic within a multi-county district. Veterans and local officials were prepared to present the Heritage Hospital/Brown Schools site as the best choice for a new clinic. Citrus County Commissioners voted unanimously to purchase the site and in July 2004 the VA selected this Citrus County site for a new Veterans Clinic.

Today the Citrus County Resource Center and Veterans Clinic is home to local, state, and federal services including a Veterans Clinic, Social Security office, Health Dept services, community center, cafe, senior dining facility, housing services, numerous senior and veteran programs, and a soon-to-open pharmacy.
